Pennsylvania Elderly Slip and Fall Prevent Tips

Slips and falls are more common than you might think, and suffering a serious injury as a consequence happens tens of thousands of times a year. Those over 65 are especially prone to both slips and falls and to more serious injuries from their slips and falls. There are a few reasons for these higher numbers - older people may have more trouble walking and keeping their balance; older people may have more trouble seeing obstacles; older people may have more fragile bones.

But despite these obstacles, there are a number of ways that senior citizens can prevent slips and falls.

· First and foremost, understand that almost half of slip and fall accidents happen in your own home. The best prevention measure you can take is fall-proofing your house with non-slip surfaces in your bathtub and on your stairs; grab handles installed on your bath; railings installed near stairs, and loose carpets and rugs tamped down. Also be sure not to leave cutter and obstacles on the floor.

· Wear sturdy shoes with traction, both indoors and out. The main thing that prevents falls is traction between the soles of your shoes and the floor. Avoid shoes with smooth or slick soles. Avoid high heels. Avoid shoes that are too big, clunky, or stiff.

· Exercise regularly. Weight training and cardio, even if it is simply walking and light lifting, will keep your bones strong, your muscles in order, and your overall coordination up. Even if someone who exercises regularly does fall, they are less likely to hurt themselves seriously.

· Visit your doctor often. Your doctor can make sure that you are good health, that you can see well, and that you are on the proper medications in the right doses. Seeing well will prevent you from missing obstacles or not seeing steps, while being on the correct medication will help your balance and alertness.

Always note that all slips and falls cannot be prevented - in many cases, slips and falls are simply caused by the negligence of someone else, such as a storeowner or landlord. If you think you have been injured and it was not your fault, contact a specialized, experienced attorney today to review your case.
